Tiny Sculptures

The project began as the idea of a kind of durable “breadcrumbs” which I could leave behind in Slovakia to return something from the new world back to the places where my relatives came from. The small sculptures were mostly sculpted outdoors similarly to the way I make plein air paintings. Because I was thinking of the sculptures as elements of the natural environment where I grew up and have lived for most of my life, they seem to form a kind of glossary of the nature which is familiar to me.

While I was in Dubravica, I made a new series using locally available terra cotta and glazes and firing them in a nearby kiln. They are different in a way which surprised me. People who are from Dubravica noticed the darker colors and felt they identified some aspect of their world.
